The Dodecanese Islands are situated in the southeastern corner of the Aegean Sea, opposite the Carian coast of Anatolia, to the east of the Cyclades Islands, and positioned between the islands of Samos and Crete. During the 16th century, the Dodecanese Islands fell under Ottoman sovereignty and underwent Italian occupation in 1912 as a consequence of the Tripolitan War. The year 1923 marked a pivotal moment when, through the Treaty of Lausanne, Italy's authority over the Dodecanese Islands was officially acknowledged, leading to their annexation as Le Isole Italiane dell'Egeo (Italian Aegean Islands). In 1934, Italy initiated a course of assertive and expansionist policies in the Mediterranean region, prompting an intensification of fortification initiatives and military operations within the Dodecanese Islands. Within this historical context, our study is dedicated to elucidating the military undertakings of the Italians in the Dodecanese Islands during the prelude to World War II, specifically spanning the years 1934 to 1939. This exploration is conducted in the illumination provided by documents sourced from the Turkish Diplomatic Archives.
